Pet separation anxiety can quickly stem from abrupt changes, and we\u2019re here to help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is Pet Separation Anxiety?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Pet separation anxiety is caused by a profound fear of being parted from their favorite human. If you think about it, you\u2019ve possibly spent more time than ever before in your pet\u2019s company. It\u2019s natural that they\u2019ll be a little confused when you start to leave without them, and not return for some time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Do I Help My Pet?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To get your pet accustomed to the idea, it\u2019s important to start out slow. Start by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.volvethosp.com\/blog\/traveling-with-a-pet\/\">leaving them home alone<\/a> for short periods of time. If they don\u2019t appear distressed by your absence, and there\u2019s no damage in the house, you can try to extend your time away from home.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you do return, however, you may be greeted by an overly enthusiastic pet. Try to remain as neutral as possible. If you overreact to them, you may inadvertently reinforce possible symptoms of pet separation anxiety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to Look For<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Some pet owners know that their pet is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.volvethosp.com\/blog\/back-to-school-helping-your-pet-cope\/\">triggered by time alone,<\/a> whereas many people may just be learning of their pet\u2019s suffering. Symptoms can vary in intensity or duration, and can include any (or all) of the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Blocking exits<\/li><li>Intense clinginess<\/li><li>Increased vocalizations, such as whining, whimpering, crying, barking or meowing<\/li><li>Pacing or restless<\/li><li>Inappetance<\/li><li>Urination or defecation in the house or outside the litter box<\/li><li>Eating poop<\/li><li>Destructive chewing, clawing, digging<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.volvethosp.com\/blog\/wild-wind-rain-keeping-pet-safe-severe-weather\/\">Escape attempts<\/a><\/li><li>Exuberant greeting when you get home<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s important to know that pet separation anxiety rarely improves on it\u2019s on own. Close owner involvement, patience and compassion can reduce triggers.
