While this is what your veterinarian wants, too, it is important to figure out the cause, type, and level of your dog or cat’s discomfort in order to find the right solution. Keep reading to learn more about how vets assess pain.

Measuring Pain in Pets

There are various pet pain scales that veterinarians can use to assign a measurement to discomfort. Think of the chart that you see in some doctors’ offices with smiling and frowning faces. Your veterinary team wants the same sort of information: is this mild discomfort, or is this truly unbearable? The goal of dog or cat pain scoring is to find a level or value that will help the doctor plan for medical care and pain management. Since this is a fairly subjective practice, however, different practices might have different pain scales.

Using Signs to Point the Way

Since pets can’t speak or point to a chart, doctors will look for signals during a veterinary pain evaluation. Some of the more obvious signs of pet distress are:

Whining or yelping when touched

Hunched posture, protecting vital organs, or reflecting the inability to straighten the spine

Limping

Growling or attempting to bite upon attempts to touch an affected area

There are some less overt signals that you may notice at home, like:

Hiding

Repeated licking, especially of a joint

Lack of appetite

Disinterest in regular social or playtime activities

Consider both physical and behavioral changes if you suspect that your pet may be hurting.

Your Pet Needs Your Help

Diagnosis, recommendations, and treatment plans all happen at the veterinary office, but we can’t do any of this without you, the pet owner. You know your pet best, so your input will be vital in assessing if your pet hurts. When you come to us to ask, “Is my pet in pain?,” we will likely then have questions for you! We’ll want to know things like:

Has your pet been stiff or limping for a while?

Will they suddenly not allow you to scratch behind their ears?

Has your dog been less enthusiastic about walks just within the last few days?

Has your cat been refusing to step over the litter box wall for a long time?

It all depends on where you’re noticing changes and for how long. The veterinarian will need your information to get the full picture.

Acute or Chronic?

Dog and cat pain assessment also involves identifying whether the condition is acute or chronic.

Acute Pain in Pets

Acute pain is new and ostensibly can be resolved relatively quickly, such as from an ear infection or a broken bone. Your vet will track down the source with diagnostic tools that might include X-ray, ultrasound, or lab work. Then, they’ll come up with a treatment plan to address the issue and ease the pain.

Chronic Pain in Pets

Chronic pain lasts over time, including soreness or aches. As the name suggests, it often comes with chronic conditions. A common example is arthritis, in which joints are inflamed, damaged, and/or degenerating. This leads to joint pain and tenderness that does not entirely resolve because the condition itself does not resolve, which can negatively impact quality of life.

Pain Management Options

Generally, if we can address pancreatitis or cure an ear infection, acute pain from those types of issues will stop when your pet is healthy again. Arthritis and other conditions of aging dogs and cats might not be “cured,” but the team at Volunteer Veterinary Hospital will work with you to find what keeps your four-legged friend as comfortable as possible. We may prescribe medication, or we may recommend you seek specialty services such as acupuncture or laser therapy.

Please note: never give your pet over-the-counter human pain medication! Doses vary widely between humans and dogs or cats, and some medications can be unsafe no matter how much you give. Let the veterinary professionals decide which medication might be right for your best furry friend.

It can be scary when you don’t know exactly why or how much your pet is hurting.
